Talk about data recovery

May 10th, 2008

When i was scimming the news i came across an interesting story. 99% of the data from the melted hard drives of the space shuttle Columbia have been recovered. The process took 2 days to do, which included taking it apart, soaking its platters in a chemical solution and then rebuilding it into a new disk. If thats not serious data recovery, i dont know what is.

Will the iPhone go viral in Canada?

May 9th, 2008

After rogers announcing its iPhone invasion to Canada, I find myself wondering… is it all its hyped up to be?

Seems like every tech savvy person in the US has picked one up and has loved it. Personally, a slick phone with wifi, full web browser, and an abundance of 3rd party apps should be on everyones wish list. Well, its on mine at least.

Rogers said it would be coming mid summer to Canada, which im definitely pumped about. My guess for pricing would be around $500.

On the other hand there are many iPhones being sold here privately and are BNIB(Brand new in box). Which is definitely very tempting, but who can you trust with $500 of your money to unlock a phone and have it work correctly for its full lifetime… yeah not many people.

I will definitely think hard about getting an iPhone, or maybe wait till it gets flash support on safari.

The trek to buying a camcorder

May 7th, 2008

So in addition to looking for a gaming console, I’m looking to buy a camcorder to do some video blogs, and random outings. The products I am looking at are the following:

JVC 30GB HDD Camcorder
Panasonic
SD
Palmcorder

So by looking at the products, clearly the Panasonic SD Palmcorder is the least expensive, but for $150 more, I could get a JVC 30Gig hard drive camcorder, and still have the SD Card slot(built-in) open for expansion. Also, by having a Hard drive camcorder it is much faster to transfer files from the camera to your computer.

On the other hand, the JVC SD Palmcorder is small(about the size of an electric shaver) and shock resistant. I read a review saying they dropped it from 1.5m without it scratching/breaking internally. Knowing me, I’m going to drop it more than 100 times in its lifetime so this is definitely a plus. Also, with the extreme expansion in solid state memory, you can get SD cards with 16GB of memory relatively cheap $69 for 16GB SD card.

Looking at the two, the 30GB hard drive will definitely more than payoff for the $150 more, considering the amount of money you will spend on SD cards for the Panasonic Palmcorder to get the same amount of space as the JVC HD camcorder.

In conclusion, the JVC definitely seems like the better deal, but I’m going to wait it out and see if I can find a better product for less.
