Taking out the sidebar on Wordpress pages

Okay, someone asked me on twitter how to do this, because they wanted a forum page and the sidebar was getting in the way.

So you need to edit just one page. What your going to want to do is create a new “template” for the page. So make a copy of page.php and rename it… say “forum.php”.

and add this at the top of the page to make sure wordpress knows its a template page:

<?php

/*

Template Name: Forum

*/

?>

next, you need to find <?php sidebar(); ?> in the code and remove it, or comment it out, save the file to the same directory as the rest of your template files. (index.php page.php single.php or whatever else is in there)

Now you need to create your page again (in the admin panel), so im assuming you can just copy/paste the forum code into the “html” section….

Make the new page, paste the code into the html section. and on the bottom right under “attributes” theres a dropdown menu labeled “template” defaulted to “default template”. click that and change it to “Forum”.

Fast Downloads from RapidShare.com

I recently was considering getting a Rapid Share account, since there are many sites which have an abundance of links to various downloads (movies, games, apps, etc). Most of them not totally legal probably but that does not concern me.

Well yesterday I broke down and got a premium account for one month just to try it, it came to something around $11. So far, I’ve downloaded around 4GB of random movies (That I already legally own *wink*). And it has definitely been worth it.

The download speeds are unreal, i get an average of 170-300kbps per part. So one movie is made up of around 5-8 parts of 100mb, and im downloading 5×300kbps which comes to a grand total of 1500kbps. Which works out to around 5 minutes to download a full 500-800mb movie.

Definitely worth the $10 if you ask me.

Also, I’ve recently painted my laptop so the before and after pics will be up soon. So stay tuned!

Meebo, lolwut?

Well since i use instant messaging a lot at work, home, and wherever else i am. I’ve grown to like Meebo, whether your behind a firewall, slow pc or just Instant messaging at home, Meebo is definitely my app of choice.

What is Meebo?
It’s a web based IM client. But uses your existing accounts for GTalk, MSN, AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, Jabber and integrates them all. The advantages of using Meebo is to have all of your IM’s in one place and having no client to load up, which makes a smaller overall footprint in your PC’s performance. Well, that and it looks pretty amazing for a web app, with custom skins, and some different icons to choose from, its definitely something to take a look at.
